Background
This is an extremely popular lab that my chemistry classes do in the spring after state standardized testing. I usually do it at the same time as tie-dying and give students the choice of either process. Then, if there are enough materials, I allow them to do a second article of clothing using the other method. Over the years other teachers have jumped on board so that, now, upwards of 3 or 4 classes are working on the lab at the same time, spread physically across two or three adjoining classrooms.
